This depends mainly on your driving habits. Or, should I say on your braking habits. It is easy to tell when you need to replace the front brakes because the pads have wear indicators on them. When they start touching the brake rotors, they make a really high pitched irritating noise. When that happens, you still have quite a few more miles before the pads are actually worn all the way down. But, I'm sure that you will change them way before that because the noise is really annoying. As far as the back, you'll have to have the mechanics check them when you have the fronts replaced. They don't wear as quickly as the fronts.
