Hi there,                I have an El and I am being somewhat easy on it at the moment,  I was wondering at what RPM should I expect the V-tec kick in and what effect is there in the power band?  Thanks.   G

You should notice the engine sounding different too!!... it goes from a waaaa... to a WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH... then if you rev too high you'll hear a POP =)

Alain,           Thanks for the info.  Is there also an increase in torque or h.p at this rpm?   Gary

NO! Wrong, wrong, wrong!

You will NOT hear a "POP" if you rev too high... you'll hear WAHWAHWAHWAHWAH... as the rev limiter kicks in. Come to an autocross and you'll hear people bouncing off the limiter all the time in those sections where it's not worthwhile upshifting. Perfectly safe to do (that's why the rev limiter's there!), but pretty harsh and not recommended for extended periods of time.

What do you mean "you can rev higher on downshifts"? Uh... the rev limiter will keep the revs below 7200, so what are you talking about.

And you're kidding about the second point, right? I sure hope so! WHY ON EARTH would you DISABLE a vital piece of equipment like your rev limiter that's designed to protect your motor? You must be mad!

heh.. well i think it's safe to rev past redline for a bit anyways.. i had a few friends doing 1/4mile runs go from 3rd to 2nd 11000rpm and honda engines didn't blow =P.. H22a and b18C.. of course that said and done i know the new celica engines blowup when going past redline.. =P.. bunch of new celica owners complaining about that.

I've learned to heel-toe, so I AM on the throttle when going through neutral on the downshift under braking, but that's VERY different from going 1-2-3-2-d'oh! I've heard stories about guys who have done it, and know one street racer that did it at least twice to his ITR. Don't know if the motor would blow immediately (the H22 block's pretty strong), but I can't imagine the valvetrain liking it particularly. I could see some pieces banging and crashing into one another and some metal getting chewed up pretty good. =)

My friend has a 97 Prelude and he downshifted from 5th to 3th to slow down for a turn.  He messed up his engine big time!  I think he bent 3 valves, and some other stuff... don't quite remember.  Yeah that guy was crazy, and a shitty driver, hehe

Well he was almost redline in 5th, I forget how fast he was going.  He had to make a turn, so he's thinking I'm going to fast, and can't use the brakes, loose control.  So he jams it into 3rd.  I bounces off the revlimiter a couple of times.  Engine seems fine after... but then he trys to start it later, it won't idle.  So he knows something is messed up, so he get it towed to Honda where they tell him the bad news.   All I got to say is that guy is an idiot, sad to say, but he is my friend, haha
