Hi,

My father (who lives in Serbia) has just purchased a 99 CRV. He's
been generally happy with a car, and is taking it to our mountin
house this weekend to test its AWD for the first time.
However, gasoline is scares and expensive back home, so he would
like to get better gas milage. With the exeption of removing side
mirrors and windsheild wipers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) the only other thing I could think
of was Tornado Fuel Saver.
I read few reviews on line, and some people loved it, others hate
it. Most everyone is using it in conjuction with K&N. I was
wondering if any of you have tried this product on your CRV, and
what the experiences were. I do not care much about HP increase, but
am more concerned with gas consumption.
So if you have one, please let me know
1.gas milege change
2.horse power change
3.with or without K&N
4.Any other ideas for my problem?

Thank you, and happy driving
Neb

Those Tornado things are a waste of $$ the best thing to do is use synthetic fluids in the whole drivetrain, make sure the tires have all the air they are supposed to & don't drive fast or takeoff fast.K&N won't give anymore mpg either it will(might) give you a slight performance increase but if your driving like you shouldit won't make a difference.

Hope this helps.

I have a 2001 CRV and have found the most efficient way to increase

fuel economy (besides the obvious - keeping tires properly inflated,

and driving conservatively, etc) is to use a slightly higher octane
fuel.

When I use mid-grade (89 octane) I get considerably better gas

mileage than when I use regular (87 octane) - to the tune of an
extra

75-100 miles per tank.  I haven't noticed that big of a difference
between

the mid-grade and high-grade (91 octane) though.

As an aside note, another thing that helps is when I get gas when
I'm

out of state.  Here in California, there is some kind of additive
that kills

gas mileage.  It isn't as bad in my CRV, but my previous vehicle
(Nissan

1996 4x4 pickup) had a lot of trouble with fuel economy when I used

gas from California - I always got great mileage when I'd fill up my
tank

in Nevada or Oregon (It also helped when it was at a higher elevation,

weird and I don't know how, but it did).

I don't know if the higher grades of gas are available in Serbia, but
if

he can get some good-quality mid-grade in his car it may help him
out.

It'd be worth a try at least.

Good Luck,

Heidi

You would not belive this, but the lowest octane you can get in serbia
is 93 I think. Most of the people buy 95. I am not sure why this is
though...

Thanks for the idea

Thanks for the input...

How do you know tornado is the waste of money? have you had personal
experiences, or know someone who has? I found a site online, that will
take your tornado back if you are not happy with it.
Because of this I would get it instantly just to test it, but I have
to ship it overseas, and if my dad dosn't like it he'd have to ship it
back.

That is a good idea, on the synthetic fluids. I know of (and use)
synthetic oil, but just recently I have changed my diferential fluids,
transmition and transfer fluids, and the only thing I found in local
parts store was regular oil. Do you know of some brand or web site,
where I could get these in synthetic version? Any other fluid you can
think of other than these that could be changed to synthetic?

Thanks again for a good idea.

The only ones who hate the Tornado are the morons who...
A: Never tried it
B: Have no understanding of airflow dynamics.
C: Are too stupid to understand how the K&N filter works.

I put in a tornado and K&N filter, and it did help. not a spectacular
difference, like you want, though.
We get 1 or 2 mpg better, and a little more pull in the low end.

Combine this with proper tire pressure, a good quality oil,
conservative driving habits, and you will add some mpg's.

For the curious, and the morons who never studied in school, here is
how they work:

The K&N works differently from a normal filter. Normal ones use a
membrane to force the air through, but not the dirt, thereby trapping it.
K&N types use the membrane to suspend the special oil. It does not do
the actual filtering, the OIL does by grabbing the particles. Then
when you wash it, the dirst goes with the oil. That's why they let
more air flow through.

The Tornado uses that extra air by reducing lower density pockets of
air within the intake tube. Normally, turbulence creates 'voids' in
the air stream, thus causing an uneven density of air in the cylinders.
By spinning the air as it flows through it, the Tornado eliminates, or
greatly reduces these pockets and creats an evenly dense volume of air.

Imagine a boat propeller. If it's in nice clear solid water, you get a
good push. If the water is aerated and foamy, it has nothing to push
against. It's called cavitation, and it happens in your intake, just
like in water.
