Hey... My water pump is shot and I think it took my timing belt with it. Has anyone had this happen? I've got a 93... I don't think it's an Si, and I know it's not a VTEC... infact, I think it's the base model. Does anyone know how many valves it has?? I'm just curious.. It's sitting at a shop waiting to be looked at, but I've got a friend that's really curious. Thanks in advance!! Mimi

Some others can probably tell by your VIN#? There are a lot of ways to tell. If you open the hood and it says DOHC or VTEC then you most likely have a Vtec. Better if it says DOHC. If you have 13" factory wheels it is almost certainly not a vtec. Also another way I think on the early models is if you have cruise control and 14" wheels, you probably have a vtec.. There are two vtec's though the SOHC and the DOHC. Pretty big difference between them. I know the SOHC Vtec is a 1.6 liter 4 valves per cylinder. And the DOHC version is two valves per cylinder, but I might be wrong on that one. The DOHC version is pretty rare. Engines: S: 1.5 I4 102 bhp @ 5900 rpm, 98 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm (Non Vtec) . Si: 1.6 SOHC I4 125 bhp @ 6600 rpm, 106 lb-ft @ 5200 rpm. (Vtec) Vtec DOHC? I think it had 160hp or so.. These were not availble as 93' models in the US so.. You have either a S or Si >

I just replaced my water pump on my S-trim 97 del sol. If you pop the hood you should find your enine number on your engine block if you look pretty much just past the radiator onto the engine block. Don't confuse this with the transmission number which will be the tag on the left. The engine block number will be the one on the right. there should be an alphanumeric engine type followed by a "-" and a fully numeric serial number. example: B16A2-2300001 the B16A2 would be the 1600 DOHC 16-valve sequential multiport fuel injected VTEC engine a D16Y7 would be the 1600 SOHC 16-valve sequential multiport fuel injected engine (NOT VTEC) a D16Y8 would be the another 1600 DOHC 16-valve sequential multiport fuel injected VTEC engine The VIN number will also tell you what trim you have: there should be a JHM followed by an EG2 or EH6 if it's EG2 it's definitely a VTEC engine, if it's EH6 read on in the series of digits for example JHMEH614 (4 denotes S trim no VTEC) JHMEH616 (6 denotes Si trim no VTEC) JHMEH617 (7 denotes si with ABS and VTEC) Note this info might not be relevant to your model since it predates 1996, I haven't had the chance to llok at a pre 96 delsol under the hood with great detail. SO I hope this works out for you. Good luck! Jet
