Hi all,

I just want to share with you fellow CRV owners my experience from
fitting a K&N filtercharger (product code 33-2031 or something!)
instead of the OEM air filter.

I am very satisfied as the new filter seems to have smoothened
appreciably the engine's operation. Noise is down, idling is 'softer'
and performance seems to have benefited from the improved airflow.

I noticed that torque has definitely gone up while going uphill at
top gear, and the auto transmission refuses to kick down from 4th to
3rd when I put the gas pedal down only as much as I did previously
with the OEM filter to force the shift down. I have not yet had the
chance to judge the top-end power, apart from cruising very nicely at
150 Km/h on the highway and looking very promising for higher speeds.

I also have not yet had the chance for a thorough calculation of fuel
consumption but from the looks of the gas meter for a given and well-
known journey it certainly looks like consumption has improved a lot.

The K&N filter cost twice as much as the standard one, but I believe
it has already started paying off. Not to mention that it does not
need to be replaced and can be easily maintained (basically washed
and re-oiled) at very long intervals (50K - 100K miles!)

Well this is it. I am quite pleased with the K&N air filter. If you
have any comments to add to mine, I will be pleased to hear from
anyone.

PS This may have sounded like a paid ad, but I assure you I have
nothing to do with K&N. I am just excited about the filter!

My K&N has been in my V for a little less than a year and all those
improvements you mentioned will improve more with age. I've had past
experiences with the K&N (my last one was an open-air element) and it
has to be the least expensive - least invasive way to get a mild
performance increase. I especially like the way it "soften" my idle. I
use regular unleaded and that low octane made my V idle rough with the
OEM filter. Love that acceleration and I too think that the K&N is the
reason I don't kick out my overdrive anymore when in town.

hi y'all,
Just to clarify; is this a replacement filter that goes into the existing
air filter box, or one of the conical 'exposed' filters that replaces the
entire black plastic filter housing?

Thanks for the tip, based on this feedback I'm going to get one installed
asap!

jd,
yes, it is a replacement for the rectangular flat filter housed in
the black plastic box just behind the passenger side headlights. I
think it only costs something like $35 - $45. You can also get a
maintenance kit ('special' detergent and oil) but given that the
filter only needs cleaning every 50K-100K you may pass on that for
quite a while.

PS I did a lot of driving this morning since I last the initial
message, and the early observations on consumption are confirmed.

It's a replacement for the OEM filter. Drops right into the box!

This is what I did on my '97 about 2 years ago. The photo doesn't give
a full appreciaton, as I was taking a picture of a mocification of the
ignition system, but there is enough there to get an idea. I completely
removed the box, installed a short piece of muffler pipe to the "horn"
assembly, and a conical K&N filter. I kept the "horn" assembly in order
to to the sound level down at wide open throttle (my wife complained about
the noise when I had it going directly to the throttle body). It definitley
added some HP and I think a bit of low end torque as well.
