Is anyone using synthetic automatic transmission fluid in their automatic
transmission equipped CR-V? If so, please let me know what you are using
and how well it is working out for you. I am strongly considering going
to a synthetic in order to gain better cold (and I mean cold, like
-40F) weather performance. My Honda manual does not indicate the type of
tranny fluid to use, just Honda's. I have not been able to find out what
would be an equivalent (such as Dexron, Ford, Mercon, etc.) so am hesitant
to try just anything without finding out first. I appreciate your replies
and comments!

You may want to give Redline a call. They could tell you which fluid
to use in your Honda. They supply lubricants to many Honda racing
teams and have done lots of testing with Hondas. I think they have a
1-800 number on their website.

I e-mailed them a couple
weeks ago, as I believe they make some of the finest synthetic lubricants
you can buy. This was the reply from Redline:

"In the Honda automatic
transaxles the Honda genuine ATF is called for. This fluid is a proprietary
closed-spec fluid, unfortunately we don't have a cross for it. I wouldn't
expect any after market fluid to satisfy this spec.

Thank you for your interest
in Red Line Oil."

Being a proprietary spec
fluid means (I think) that no one can get their formula. It doesn't necessarily
mean that nothing else will work, but that none of the synthetic manufacturers
can stand behind their product in this application.
