hi all, First of all, many thanks for all the useful tips and information I've gleaned from this mailing-list. I've been lurking quietly for awhile and have learnt an awful lot from people like Saltman, David Miller and all you others. Now I have a problem I hope y'all can help with:
I have a right-hand drive '98 CR-V automatic. It's imported reconditioned from Japan, so I've only had it for less than a month though it's 3+ years old. Mileage is around 18,800 km (less than 12,000 miles). Problem: when I'm idling on a steep slope in drive (D4 gear) the car will roll to the rear unless I step on the brake. Every other automatic I've ever driven remains stationary when idling in 'drive' so this worries me a lot.
According to the mechanic here this is caused by "insufficient pressure in the gearbox" though he can't say what causes the problem without opening up the entire gearbox - which will cost a fortune. However he also insists that it isn't a critical issue, and no lasting damage will be caused. His advice is to just rest my foot on the brake when idling on a slope, and live with it. The car is okay on mild slopes but not on any significant gradient. The engine idles normally even when it's rolling backwards - no increase or decrease in revs.
Has anybody else ever experienced such a problem, any idea what causes it and any suggested solutions?

well that's a relief - if mine's not the only one that does it then maybe it's not a serious fault. I noticed that the car also stays still if I step on the accelerator a bit. Right now it idles at around 800rpm; if I nudge the gas pedal so it's at around 1,000revs the car stops sliding. Could it just be that the idling speed is set too low?

well that's okay then - as long as it's not some mysterious fault in the gearbox which is going to come back and haunt me later... Keeping a foot on the brake pedal isn't going to kill me!
