My 98 CRV-EX automatic has developed a shudder when cruising at about 30 to 35. If I cruise along at that speed without accelerating or de-celerating, my tach drops from about 2k to about 1.5k rpms and then shudders like I am lugging the engine.

It almost feels like when you start in the wrong gear in a manual trannie vehicle. This does not happen if I am driving in D3, just D4. And if I modulate the gas pedal slightly, making the tach go up or down a little, I can stop it. If I do that constantly, I can keep it from happening at all. Is my transmission shifting into a gear inappropriately? Any ideas?? I'll be taking it in to the dealer to have them check it, but I would appreciate any input that you guys who have had a CRV longer than me might be able to give me.

Thanks,

JRC

i had something like that and finally the check eng light came on, but it was the throttle position wiring, the service tech redid the connectors.

Thanks for the input. After I posted my message, I took the V to the Honda Dealership Service Department, and they kept it for a day. Last night I went to pick it up because I need it until Monday, and they tell me that my torque converter is failing and that I need a new trannie.

I am having trouble because the Warranty company (Universal) will not put a new or a re-manufactured unit in, they will only cover a "used, low miles" unit. In the groups experience, is this NORMAL?? I didn't expect them to spring for a new one, but am I unreasonable to expect at least a "re-man" w/ the usual 36/36 warranty? There is nothing in the language of the warranty about replacing parts in my vehicle with "junkyard parts".

I will also have them check that throttle wiring. Maybe all this other stuff can be avoided.
