Just installed a new trailer hitch, It was disappointing to see that
the bumper is only a thin plastic , the only support is a piece of
Styrofoam. How did Honda do so well in the crash test! Anyway back to
my main point Has anyone found a product for removing the scratches
to the plastic on the dash, bumper etc. thanks for you time...

What did you think that the bumper was made of????

Gone are the days of the chrome bumpers that weigh more than a civic.

The crash tests are all about the structure of the vehicle absorbing the energy of an accident. The bumper, specifically the Styrofoam, does nothing other than protecting the front and rear in a low speed "fender bender".

As far as the scratches go, how deep are they? Mother's pre-cleaner or scratch remover work very well. The Meguire's scratch X is a good product. There are more abrasive products that can be used. There are specific plastic products that are used for Lexan or Plexiglas.

I'm a Meguiar's man and have Scratch X. I do my laundry at the
landromat and I place my laundry basket on the rear bumper while I
unlock the rear window and it's scratched. I figure I had to live with
it. Now I may have a chance to remove the scratches. Thanks for the
advice from all of us Jeff.

I think you will find it is the rear bumper of most autos that use Styrofoam. I know from my manual and removing it, my 91 Civic has the same arrangement.

It is the front bumpers that have a steel structure behind the foam part. When you remove the bumper as a whole, the steel structure can be removed from the "plastic".

I seem to recall that it was my '79 and '80 Accords that still used a fluid filled pressurized shock which supported a metal bumper.

Meguiar's makes a product called Mirror Glaze Professional Medium-Cut Cleaner. It is very abrasive, follow this up with two Mother's Pre-Clean treatments and a couple of treatments of a GOOD carnauba paste wax like Mothers.

I had to do this on my spring cleaning of my, my wife's, CR-V. A couple of spots on the hood and doors that the winter left as a reminder NOT to use a snow brush, ever! It does take a little faith that the shine will come back after using the Meguiar's product. I absolutely love the black (navy blue pearl) of the Nighthawk Black Pearl of the 2000 Honda CR-V.

Sorry, I am geeking out here
