Just got a new 2002 CRV. Has anybody had any experience with the on
demand 4WD being used along a sandy beach. I haven't been able to
find any information on how well the on demand 4WD deals with this.
I have an automatic which I am told has a better low gear ratio for
this kind of driving.

we've had our '98 on the beach at Inskip Point (QLD) but only for a brief
test run as the tides were no good. It handled it OK, we did get stuck in
soft sand at one point, but 2 people could easily push it out.

If your thinking about beach driving, it's a good idea to go in with at
least one other vehicle and have all the recovery gear, oh and make sure you
drop your tyre pressure. Just how much to drop it is a point of contention,
but somwhere between 18-22psi. Keep your speed down at this tyre pressure
though, don't attempt to drive home on the highway untill they've been
re-inflated.

A lot depends on the beach as well, I've heard that Cooloola beach (Noosa
north shore - QLD) the sand is rock hard and some people have even spotted
the odd Toyota Camry up there, but somwwhere like Stockton Beach in NSW has
really soft sand that you really need low range gearing to tackle...

Good luck, and let us know how you go!

I have a 01 Honda CRV. Take it on the beach at democrat point Fire
Island ( long island ny) for some surf casting for striped bass in
fall..You need to deflate to 15 psi..have tow cables available( just
in case..you are better off staying on hard damp sand than really
soft..I have been stuck twice..got out by pushing..but so far so Good

I have seen Subaru Forresters on the beach..and if they can handle it
so can the Honda

Thanks Bob and Darren

I will line up a friend with low range 4WD and head off to the sand
at Stradebroke Island and Cooloola. I will let you know how I get on.
