Hi all..

I just joined this club. I am thinking of buying a S2000, but there are a few things that concern me about it. Yes, I do know that as far as the engine goes, it's an awesome car!! However, someone here mentioned the bad stereo (and I *have* to have a good sound system when I'm breezing thru traffic), which is one of my concerns. Another is the dang PLASTIC back window!! ughhh

Now, my *dream* car is the porsche boxster! Right now my thinking is that I'd rather have an older boxster than a brand new S2000 (which both seem to run about $37,000). I know some of you might be thinking that I am crazy for considering to buy a used car instead of this one, but keep in mind that I said the Boxster was my DREAM CAR. (I think most of us know what it's like to dream about those)

Ok...so any thoughts about this??

I canceled my Boxster order when I saw the S2000. I don't regret it for a minute.

The Boxster has more trunk space, and more available options. Other than that, the S2000 outperforms it in every aspect, including cornering, accelerating, driving feel, and especially reliability - not to mention price.

As for the bad stereo, it does suck in the S2000, but so does the Boxster's. In fact, even their "upgraded" stereo sucks!

I have heard that simply upgrading the speakers is sufficient in the S2000, but you can also mount a better amp in the trunk. I have not done so yet, but I will probably just upgrade the speakers.

The problem is that this car is pretty loud, and with the top down on the freeway, you have to crank the stereo to max just to hear it. At that point, the POS speakers fall apart big time. I'm hoping to blow my speakers, so they can be replaced on warranty - if I can tolerate them long enough.

Another problem with the stereo is that your left knee completely covers one of the speakers - at least mine does. Again, requiring you to turn up the volume.

As for a Boxster being a dream car, I would take the S2000 over a Boxster any day - the stereo can be fixed.

Just my $.02

If the sound system is the only thing holding you back that can be easily be replaced. Most sound systems in any car are not up to par with me too. WHen I get a car the stereo usually gets chucked first.

There is a product from 3M which is for the plastic rear window to keep it from getting cloudy. I forget where you can get it - I think someone said K-Mart but not sure.

The Boxster might be more available than the S2000 though. And most dealers are price gouging the S2000 cause of it's techonological superiority than most roadsters out there now.

I'm interested in buying an s2000, but the comments about the noise bother me. What is the cabin noise like in the boxter with the top down going 80 ?

woz,
I just took delivery of my triple black S2000 today. Only drove it about 20 miles before having to go to work but I can attest that there is a lot of wind noise at all highway speeds with the top and windows down. I haven't tried rolling the windows up to see if that helps. The car is a kick to drive and the ergonomics are very good. The stereo sucks but with the wind noise I don't think a high end stereo would help. This car is meant to be a drivers car and it accomplishes that quite nicely. If you want a nice queit car with good jams get a Lexus. This car is a keeper!
Randy

Randy, Thanks, I like the triple black the best too and have been looking around for this one. Found one used in charlotte (w/ 700 miles) for 36,900, saw a grey one at a honda dealer in roanoke (new) for 35,000. Any suggestions on price ?

Well, It's a sellers market so you have to pay a premium. I talked to 2 dealers before I bought and didn't really shop around. They were asking 37,415 and 39,000. I talked to a friend at a Honda dealership in FL and he's been getting 36,000. I'm in southern CA and bought for 36,000. I might have been able to save a couple of bucks somewhere else but for me it's not worth the hassle. Also, you have to take whatever they have and I wanted the black so I'm happy.
I have about 400 miles racked up now and I still get wood every time I get in it :)
They probably should have left the stereo out because it's pretty worthless. Oh well...
Glad I bought though. Hope this info helps.
Randy
