hi everyone,
I own a '98 model automatic right-hand drive V imported from Japan. It has
one annoying feature which I'm trying to get rid of. When I shift into
reverse gear, the car emits an irritating 'ting-tong' alarm sound. This is
*not* a reverse sensor, but is apparently just a reminder that the car is in
reverse. I've been trying to disable it (so I can install a reverse sensor)
and I've tracked the sound down to a white circuit-box about the size of a
pack of cigarettes under the steering column. However from the look of the
box it probably contains more than just the alarm, and I'm uncertain if it's
safe to disconnect it. Does anybody know what this little box does, and if
it's safe to disconnect?

Thanks in advance,
jd

How many wires go to the box?

Eight, by my count. I stuck my digital camera under the dash and took a
picture of the box. It's marked 'Mitsuba Inter Lock Control 12V RK-027' so
it's obviously not just a speaker! The alarm sound is coming out of the
perforated panel on the bottom, to the left of the wires in the picture.
Any idea how I can disable the annoying sound without doing anything more
serious to my beloved V?

Thanks in advance, y'all

You could try and MINIMIZE the sound by taping the holes shut and wrapping
the module up with foam & tape OR pry the cover off and cut one of the wires
leading to the buzzzzzer.
