If you still have R12 in the system, you need to take it to a shop, so they can recover and recycle it. You can replace the O-rings in the retrofit kit yourself after this is done. Then take it back and have them replcae the dryer, vacuum down the system, and refill it with 134-a.

Another thing you might want to look into is to go with Freeze 12 instead of the R134a. You don't have to change anything, just have your system sucked down and replace the R12 with Freeze 12. The last time I bought some, about 3 yrs ago, it was running about $20 a can as opposed to $58 a can for R12. I ran it for about two yrs in my Olds before I sold it and it worked just fine. I did notice that it didn't quite get as cold as the R12 but it really was not that much of a difference, and it was only a third of the price at the time.
