Hi! I've done my share of research on the CR-V EX and have
made up my mind to get one today. We live in Muncie, Indiana
but are planning on driving to Indianapolis for a better deal. Any
suggestions on what price I should settle for? The MSRP is
$21,990.

Automatic: Invoice $19692 MSRP $21550
5-speed: Invoice $18962 MSRP $20750

Add $440 to each for destination charges.

Sounds like you're looking at an automatic.

I wouldn't necessarily drive somewhere for a "better" deal, unless I
checked my local dealer first.

If it were me, I'd just offer $20K for one.

They're going to pick up about $500 on the holdback after selling the
vehicle.

Remember -- they are trying to clear out their inventory prior to the
2002 models coming out in a month, or so.

Hope that helps!!

I live in Richmond, Indiana. I purchased a 2000 NEW  CRV EX a year ago.  I tried to purchase locally and in Muncie, Dayton Ohio. And several dealerships in the tri-state.  I ended up at DAN Young Honda in Indianapolis and saved 1000.00 dollars over the local dealership here in Richmond.

I had even been given a promise by the owner of the dealership  here that he would beat any offer.  I showed him and he went back on his word.

As with all things there are exceptions, and there are greedy folks involved.

All dealers pay the same price for their vehicles.

Remember, going to a larger dealership doesn't always guarantee a better price.  They also have a lot more property, inventory, personnel, utilities, service area, etc -- that they have to pay for.

All dealers, large, small, and in between have an interest in selling vehicles.

I've purchase from large and gotten the shaft.  I've purchased from small, and been given the royal treatment.

Personally, I've purchased 6 Honda's new.  Of them, the best deals that I have received have been from small dealerships.

Just my experience.....  When I bought my CR-V, I was "automatically" going to go back to a dealer that I had purchased from previously, even though it was almost 300 miles away.  However, I went to the local dealer, after doing some research -- gave them the price that I wanted to pay, and they said "OK", and that was it!  I was talking to the other dealer a bit later, and they said that they wouldn't have touched that price!!

I'm satisfied with the small dealer that I, err, deal with here.  I'm on a first name basis with the parts manager, and he gives me "inside" pricing (the same as the people who work there) without me even asking.  He just punches it in his calculator and tells me what it is.  I get prices comparable, if not less, than what is available on Internet.

David.  I noticed your list of Hondas owned and was amazed to see a '99 CRV with 97,000 miles.  You must spend a lot of time in it!  I thought I was putting a lot of miles on my '97 Civic EX (78,000 since 6/97).

David - any idea on the prices for the 2002 models? If it were me, I'd
wait and get the new generation CR-V... maybe I will anyways!

Well.....

Where I live, I'm 30 miles (all mileage references are one way) back and forth to work.  I did this from the time of purchase till I got my '90 CRX.  Now I drive my '89 and '90 CRX's back and forth, most of the time.

I work in the closest town (Bowling Green, KY) of significant size.  Where I live there is a population of 8000.  The closest major city (Nashville, TN) is about an hour away.

My parents are in bad health, and they live 300 miles away and I get up to help them out on a weekend every three weeks or so.

Two of my kids live 185 miles away from me.  My ex and I meet 105 miles away, and exchange the two, and the one with me, three weekends out of the month, on Friday, and then again on Sunday.  Of course they have activities that I need to run up and see every once in a while - school programs, church programs, soccer, basketball, softball, cross country, etc.

In addition, I've taken the "V" to DC, upper Michigan, and Florida twice.

I live in western Kentucky.

For a long time, I was "averaging" about 100 miles a day.

Since I got the '90 CRX (My '89 needed a bunch of work done on it, and I just most all of it done in the past couple of months), my wife has been driving the V, and we're getting ready to sell her old car - a '94 bu-ICK lesabre.  She works for a small school district and is in charge of all computer operations.  She drives it about 35 miles a day (average) between schools.

I'm trying to keep the miles under 100K, in anticipation of getting a 2002 CR-V.

One of my main concerns is cost of driving.

My '90 CRX Si is mo

No, not yet.  Pricing is to be released Nov. 12th, I believe (or is it the 15th?) -- for the 2002 models.  From everything that I've read, pricing should be from around 19K for a 2wd LX, to around 23K for an EX.
