The mileage drops because when you use 87 or 89
octane gas in the TL the engine is getting slowly
screwed up. But if you want to save on gas prices then
who cares about the engine right ?

The octane
rating of the gas determines how much the gas can be
compressed before it ignites in the engine cylinders. The
higher the octane rating the more it can be compressed
before igniting it.

Cars (like our TL) which use
only premium gas (minimum 91 octane) compress the gas
more than the cars using regular gas (87 or 89 octane
rating). So what happens when you put 87 or 89 octane in
the TL well ... the engine will try and compress it
to a level thinking that it is a minimum 91 octane
... but before it finishes compressing the gas to
that level the gas ignites (premature ignition). The
engine and the cylinders are not ready for this. This
damages the cylinders, piston rings and the other parts
of the engine.

For some of you this may be
too technical but I just want to say that if you are
using anything other than premium gas for the TL then
you are abusing your engine.

So friends it is
your choice ... Acura knew very well what it was
saying when it gave the label PREMIUM UNLEADED GAS ONLY
for the TL.
