Many times accidents are not reported, so there is no way that Car Fax would know. I think the best bet would be to take it to a reputable mechanic and let him check it out.

When buying a used car I always take it to a mechanic that I trust before I buy it. I just would rather be sure that everything is on the up and up.

We once bought a used car, and the salesman was really pushing us to take the car to a mechanic up the street that he said was one of the best he had ever dealt with. I found it funny he kept pressing so hard about this particular mechanic. We did go by and see his mechanic who told us that the car was in perfect condition. Something just didn't seem right so I took it to another mechanic who told that I was getting ready to buy a lemon, and that it looked like someone had "rigged" the car so that it would ride smooth for maybe two to three weeks tops and then major problems would come. Anyways, point is I agree. Always always take the car you are potentially going to buy to a TRUSTED mechanic.

That is so true that places do that kind of stuff. They basically want to get it off of the lot or out of the driveway and then your on your own.

I agree with the strategy of taking the car to a mechanic you trust.

I developed the trust I have in my mechanic by leaving my Civic with him one day, with no reverse gear.

I was expecting that I needed a new transmission. I got a call half an hour later and he said all I needed was a cable.
