The area your are referring to is for the electric tailgate release
button. It is stock on our UK cars and is on our (your passenger for
US) drivers door.

Do you not get this in the US/CAN?

Cool... well our vehicles are left hand drive which means it would be silly
to put the tailgate opener on the right side of the vehicle. Our tailgate
opener is located below and to the left of the steering wheel on the front
dash area... just a little below the window controls.
