Hello everyone. I am new to this club and own a 1997 Honda Civic DX. I'm interested in turning my not so powerful DX into an SI. Does anyone know if it's possible to do this without changing the entire engine?
I know the CAMs are different and the chip is too. I would appreciate someone knowledgeable's response to my question. I'm just now getting into fixing up my Civic. I had a 1988 Saab 9000 Turbo but it turned out to be a lemon. It was a major disappointment.
So far I have had the windows tinted, put an EX console into it, put a 6 disc changer into it but I've only been working on it for a week now. I will be purchasing rims and 16" tires for it before too long.
I'm happy to be a part of this club and look forward to hearing from some of you later.

Thanks

IF you wanna Modify you eninge with out making a swap. The best way to go is gonna start by getting a Cold Air Intake (AEM) makes the best in my opinion). Get Header and exaust. DC Headers are good and there are a oooad of good exausts ou there GREDDY and Thermal R&D are a few good ways to go. There are some other things you can do but it depends on if you want a turboed car or a naturally aspirated one. The Cold Air intake will run you about 220 the Exaust about 600 and the DC header really depends on where you get it.

If you are looking to swap the Integra GS-R Motor is the way to go it puts out about 160hp and about 135 Ft/pds of torque. TI will make your car run somewhere in the mid 14'sn that swap will cost you depending on location about $6000

The SI swap is a bit cheaper runnning about $4500-$5500 depending on where you are. But you will not be nearly as fast as a GSR.

Another way to go would be upgrading to the D16z which is the 1.6 SOHC motor that comes in the EX civics. ANd just dumping on a turbo. If you are strapped for cash but have a bit to spend this is prolly the cheapest way to do it.

As far as External Mods. YOu can get Progector Headlights add some colored bulbes get some Euro corner and Get hyper white bulbs for them get your self some rear lights and maby add a side light or two and there is alwas the path of the body kit.

There are lots of interal changes you can make petals, seats, indiglo gauges, shift nob , sort shifter. the list goes on and on. But over all here is the consensus your car now Runs mid to high 17's maby low 18's after Intake Header Exaust you can Hope to hang with a STOCK EX running low to mid 16's. With the GS-R swap you will be running mid 14's no mods at all and riding with Mustangs and Camaros. If they mess up you win. After mods it is whoever is the better driver. And when i say mods i am only talking about Cold Air Intake, Header, and exaust. Not turboed and no building of the engine its self.
With the SI motor you will be running mid 15's after mods high 14's.

Withthe EX swap you run mid 16's then withthe turbo you run mid 14's.

With The GSR swap you make Most any other honda look stupid. And Will make domestic v8's cringe at your presence. With the SI swap you will make other hondas look stupid. ANd make domestics really want to not miss a gear. And with the EX + turbo swap basically the same as the GSR.

Good Luck to yah. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me or pop me a line Here

what kind of car do you have? and as far as engine swaps, i was thinking of putting the dohc vtec type r, with 197 hps. i have a 97' honda civic sedan... do you know if it'd fit and if so how much it'd be. my car's current mods are basically body only... wings west touring body kit, 17" konig monsoon rims w/ kuhmo tires, 5% tint, generation 2 taillights, projector headlights, gtr combat wing... that's about all for now, until i get the type r engine. any one that has any questions or suggestions for/about my car just e-mail me.
brian rousis
1997 honda civic lx sedan
warminster, pa

Hey man,

Thanks for replying to my question. I have a 1994 Civic LX sedan. All I have so far is the euro tails, 5% tint, 17" Spider 3's, $5000 stereo system, and the clear corner markers. I'm still in the process of engine swapping, but I'm taking it kind a slow until I get back on my feet financially. I'm really not sure about the type r, but you're probably looking around a couple of grand to change engines. Keep in touch and I'll ask some of my friends who have Hondas and let you know something. By the way where do you think the best place for me to get the body kit and projector headlights that would look good on my 1994 model?

Thanks Again,

Dustin

As far as the japaneese Type R you have to be careful becasue that is an illegal swap. The only legal swaps are with a motor that was produced here in the US of the same model year or newer than your car. The type R would be a good swap What i would do if i were you would be to do a little reserch. I would compair the Teg GS-R motor and the Type R motor. The Type R motor swap is gonna run you way more for import fees and car modifications. for 30 more hp and i am not sure what the torque difference is. The actual swap it self will cost you about 3k more than the GS-R. And if you get pulled over for speeding and the courts decide to check the legality of you motor slip and find it is a japaneese motor your in some trouble. I think (My opinon) that the best possable legal swap here in america for a civic is the GS-R swap. This engine will make your civic scoot. I mean mid 14's no mods in a civic is crazy....

I have a 94 with EX stickers and a GS-R under the hood. It took me two years to save up the $5300 it cost me to do the swap and i have never been happier. The difference in the car is unbelieveable. I'll be getting various motor mods soon. Well... As soon as i get out of debt =0)

but hands down the GS-R is the best possable motor swap available that is legal and believe me you WILL be satisfied......

-Josh

I've put a Type-R engine in my 95 LX sedan this week. I also converted to car from automatic to manual.

The reason why I went the type-r (it's a USDM) over the GSR is infact the added 30-35 FACTORY HP. Plus, there's something that everyone keeps forgetting when it comes to a Type-r transmission...it comes with a LSD! That alone there is worth 800-1000 (Cdn dollars here..) plus the added factory HP is a bonus, PLUS a better computer.. From there, you could easily add on more HP and torque over the GSR with a good set of cams.

Basically, it all comes down to your budget..I was looking at it and the GSR swap would've costed me 6,000 (engine, tranny and all PLUS the automatic to manual swap) whereas the ITR swap cost me 8,000 and I got everything else plus an ICEMAN CAI and B&M Fuel Pressure regualtor thrown in...

If I wasn't doing the AT-=> MT swap..it would've costed me 1K less.

all these prices are in Canadian dollars...
