Hi,
I have a 2001 Cr-v with 50K miles on it. The check engine light has
been coming on and it seems to suddenly lose power when idle and
shake around a bit especially if the AC is on. I got the error code
checked out and it said it was misfiring in cylinder 4. I changed
the spark plugs and it seemed to work for a few days but it had the
same problem again. I took it in and they are saying it might be the
injector but they are not sure and to find out if that is the problem
it will cost me $150 just to test it then $600 to change all of the
injectors since they recommend they all should be changed not just
one. Anyone have any suggestions? Could it be the wires and if so
how could I be sure? Do I have to get all of the injectors changed
if I choose to do that? Thanks in advance for any help.

What does the exhaust look like?- I would suspect sensors if it is running
really rich, which should show up in the exhaust. There is another sensor
- mass air flow sensor (?) or something like that, that could also be the
culprit. Strange that it is only reporting 3 misfire codes, though. Just
a wild thought - could the sensor for camshaft position (signalling spark
timing for ignition system) be defective or out of position slightly enough
that #2 cylinder works consistently, but the other three are inconsistent?

If you buy a service manual (I have an recommend the Honda factory
manual from Helm) it will have all of the instructions on how to test
the vehicle to get to the root of the problem. My '98 had a CEL and
using the manual and the "service connector" I was able to determine
that the problem was a bad catalytic converter. The service connector
plugs into a pigtail behind the center console on the passenger's side
and causes the CEL to flash a code which can be checked against the
diagnostic trouble codes in the manual.

Of course, you must be at least slightly mechanically inclined to do
this. In my case I replaced the catalytic converter with a new high
flow Random Technologies cat. That job turned out to sound easier than
it actually was because the secondary O2 sensor, which resided in the
cat, is very delicate and costs over $500 to replace if damaged! I was
successful however! Yay!

If I were in your position I'd do some of my own testing, and maybe
even replace some parts just to see if they help. For example, some
performance injectors and plugs w/plug wires, maybe a high pressure
fuel system (pump, regulator) and possibly an MSD ignition system.

Good luck, and keep us posted with how things turn out.

Later,

Matt

Hi, try running run some injector cleaner by penzoil 4x4 in your gas tank when you fill up next time with 92 octane before you take it in. Make sure the gas cap close tight or the "check engine light" will come on. I think some of your intake and exhaust valve clearance has tighten up. This will cause rough idle and lose of power. Recently my 2000crv with 42k has rough idle and lose of power. I too thought my injector was clogged, but when I checked the valve clearance one of my intake was tighten and three of my exhaust also tighten. The service manual said no adjustment until 105k,but that's not true. To erase "check engine light" pull fuse 7.5A in the fuse box under the hood and wait 10second and put it back. To know if it work right your dash clock will reset to 1:00. I hope this help.

Isn't that what the warranty should cover?

The warranty is 3 years or 36k miles. Since he's at 50k he's out of
warranty.

Kham's suggestion of injector cleaner is probably a good first step,
but if I have to read about how his CR-V's valve's tightened up one
more time I'm probably going to scream. Hey Kham, we all heard you the
first time! Stop repeating yourself! :-)

Later,

Matt
