Yesterday, going south on the New Jersey TPK in a 5 lane section
(near exit 12 or 11?) I had the cruise control set at 79 MPH. The
car in front of me went over and threw up a piece of sheet metal. I
checked the right mirroe and swerved right to avoid it. The back end
then went straight instead of following the front. Without hitting
the break, I steered into the skid and promptly started a skid in
the other direction. After several more attempts to get control,
sweaving across all 5 lanes while trucks and cars slowed to give me
space, I tapped the brakes, swerved a few more times and spun around
backing to a stop - adrenaline pumping.
Question - should we ask Honda to have the cruise control shut off
if the ABS system detects a skid? I am now training myself to hit
the clutch and downshift in a skid, but I think the power was still
on the rear wheels through the first 3 or 4 swerves until I hit the
brakes to disengage cruise control.
