If the question is should you get them, I would skip on them both. Honda's
hold their value well, esp the CRVs since they are quite popular (from what
I've seen while searching for a used one). I'm at 75K on my '97 Prelude and
have never had a problem that would have been covered under an extended
warranty.

I'm sure you'll find some people that swear by them, but in my case, that
$1000+ goes a long way to fixing most problems that I might have. Honda has
a known problem with the 97 & 98 transmissions on the Preludes, but even
under warranty they wouldn't do anything about my 2nd and 5th gear grind.
I'll be damned if I'm going to give them $1000+ to refuse service on my
Honda!

just thought I would add my two cents worth about the extended
warranty issue.

Everyone is going to have their own preferences and sure there are
plenty of times when the extended warranty was used and the amount
totaled more than the price of the warranty--thus creating an overall
savings. But we are talking about a Honda and I think such occurences
are more often the exception rather than the rule. I'm saying using
the law of averages the warranty would not be worth the money.

This is only my opinion, but the real question is whether you need
the peace of mind, or do you like to gamble a little bit? The odds
are in your favor with the Honda CRV.

I like to think of my self as a calculated risk taker!

I felt the same way when I picked up my '02. I feel 3 years is a
little short when inferior companies are offering standard longer
warranties(and told Honda that when they called me), but the Honda
quality and the high price of the extended warranty made me chance it
and not buy it. Either way, the really expensive parts still break a
month after it runs out!

Extended warentees are not much more than insurance.
You trade $$ for peace of mind.
The company has years of experiance in the incedence and cost of
repair. On the average they always win.
But if you are a risk-adverse person, then the peace of mind is well
worth the cost of the policy, less the real cost of repairs.
And if you are riddled with bad luck, then they are a good bet, since
bad luck would say that once the policy is paid for, nothing covered
would ever break.

That's the best anology I think I have heard on the
subject of insurance or extended warrenties. I
personally never by them. And have yet to use one. My
Honda's have never had the need.

Over the years I get tired of saying it over and over again, but I totally
agree with you. Say "NO" to extended warranties especially if you are
buying a vehicle with a reliable history. YEAH right, you saved thousands
by getting the warranty and then needing repairs, can I get you to PICK some
lottery numbers for ME !!

Doesn't anyone read or get "Consumer Reports" ( THE NON-PROFIT, NO
ADVERTISEMENT PUBLICATION!!). 15+ years for me, they have been RIGHT so
many times, and manufacturers like Suzuki and Isuzu LOSE in court trying to
sue them

I bought an extended warranty and wound up replacing the Auto Transmission on my CRV. It was worth it to me. Now I have a new transmission which has its own warranty which will go way past the original or extended warranty on the vehicle. I expect to do at least 200k miles on this baby.

We may not have a CRV yet (although they had an EX 5spd at the local dealer,
just like we want!), however, I'll be happy to list out the problems that
I've had with my 1997 Honda Prelude. I do agree with you in the fact that I
will not buy a first year vehicle again, but additionally, alot of my gripes
have to do with my local (crappy) dealer just as much as they do with Honda.
That being said, my experiences have been such that the worst Honda I've
owned has been better than the best "other domestic maker" I've owned.

Does that mean you have had a lot of problems with your CRV?

I look at factual data, the service contracts are a waste of money for most vehicles that have reliable records.  If you REALLY want to search further, check to see how much money the contract writers take-in and how much they pay-out.

Like the "HEARTBEAT OF AMERICA" and "LIKE A ROCK" commercials Chevy shovels down our patriotic throats.  How about producing more reliable vehicles.  I get tired of the lies and misleading advertisements.  I speak from educated and actual experience.

The Honda CR-V was just rated the MOST RELIABLE vehicle sold in the USA.

Sorry, maybe you service contract buyers are not experienced "gamblers".  Buying a service contract is "gambling".

Hey, maybe you might also want to pre-pay your families deaths and your own with one of those service contracts

I'm a Nuclear Inspector by occupation, so you have to EXPECT me to be a dick about it!! You must have a "crystal ball" too, because I'm also a """"PAID"""" evaluator for vehicle stuff among other things (FUNKY DRINK presently) etc.

If the tires are not safe enough for MY needs, I change them, that includes the HELLA H-4 100/80w bulbs and DESIGN-TECH halogen back-up bulbs.

Thanks David for the ROFLMAO, I believe my PANTIES are in a wad but it feels so good.

Roenick, the best of us only get better when the heat is on,  a wake-up call, no offense intended.
