Hey Guys,

I need some advice. Last year, Christmas of 2000, my Dad bought me a new
Honda 2001 CR-V 5DR 4WD EX. I love the car, but...but...it lacks pick up and
I REALLY wanted a 5-speed which we could not find. (Hey, beggers can't be
choosers.) Now, he has offered to trade for a 5-speed without 4WD...Passport.
What are my options? I really don't need the 4WD in Atlanta, and a 5-speed
with it is quite expensive. The dealer, in Virginia, is offering to trade for
$4600. My current CR-V has less than 10,000 miles on it and is in mint
condition. Are there some things I should know about the 2002 Passport?
Should I stay *put*?

Help!!

Janie

I know that earlier years of the Izuzu built Passport do not come with the
same Honda-built quality of the CRV. I suggest using Consumer Reports and
checking the past history on the Passport before you trade, then compare
that to the CRVs. I hesitate to comment fully since it's been some time
since I've checking CR about the Passport, but I *think* you'll find the CRV
a much better quality vehicle.

I would suggest spend a couple, and maybe get a (for lack of better word) couple
air intake accesories, and maybe a higher performance
exaust...

I say this b/c the CRV is a GREAT built car,,, its tuff, and you may not know
it.. but even when it rain you probably use the 4wd system..'

but Im just an ametuer not a pro.. (so im not sure if that is the way to
go...just a suggestion)

NO! dont go with the passport. i had a rodeo last 94 and it gave me
lots of small problems. even the tranny went off to neutral suddenly
while on the freeway and i have to turn off the car to reset the ecu, but
it only happened once. plus transmission oil change is a pain and
expensive. you cant do it yourself. that that dealer the only gave you
$4600 for your v, they are giving you less than half of what your v is
really worth. hope you dont have to deal with them when you get your
next car.

not enough power? like the other guy suggested, try an aftermarket
intake and exhaust. i have a weapon-r dragon intake filter and a dynomax
superturbo(cheapest i can find) exhaust. both of them could cost you as
low as the low $200 ( self installed intake and labor for exhaust
installation included). together, they work really good for my v. i
tried to reinstall the oem intake and i can feel the difference. i went
back to aftermarket. plus upgrading to a high performance shocks(tokikos
are the cheapest high quality ones) and tires(slightly lower profile
215/65s or saltman's 235/65s tires) would really make your v feel like a
sports sadan. i love to drive my v even further with this setup,
especially in twisty mountain roads. you'll be tempted to push your v
harder than usual.

if you really want to get a 5 speed, wait for the pilot. but that's a V6
and you'll spend more on gas and maintenance.

choices, choices, choices...... good luck!

why not get a '02 CRV? It doesn't lack pickup(up 25 or so hp from
yours), and the 5 speed is a real blast to drive. You could probably
afford to keep the AWD as well, just in case you ever need it. The 5
speed is nice and silky, and it's a real Honda product. I'm sure now
that Honda is dropping the Rodeo/Passport, it will be shunned like a
redheaded stepchild by the dealers when it comes to repairs and trade-
in value too. The '02 is what you need! just my opinion of course

I'd pass on the PASSPORT and wait for the Honda Pilot this summer. I have
seen so many Honda Passports being repaired over the years. Most people
that own them didn't even know they were really buying an ISUZU RODEO!!

The 235/60-15 Yokohama Avid S/T tires from the tirerack.com ($50-$60) are my
favorite. Very quiet and reasonable performance in the rain/snow.

Eric et al.,
What is known about the Honda Pilot at this point? Will Honda manufacture it,
will it be about the same size as the CR-V, what size engine, and will
5-speeds be readily available? They were NOT with the CR-V which is why I
have this problem now.

Thanks,
Janie

Honda will manufacture it, significantly larger than the CR-V (its 8
passenger), 3.5L V6 from Odyssey/MDX, I suspect there will not be any
5-speeds produced.

This is what Honda is saying. There's also a car called model X. The info is sketchy and I can't access any images but one. Anyone know more about it?  Pam

yes, but the choice was to move to a passport from a crv. Everyone else has
mentioned the isuzu manufacture of the passport which would deter me from
purchasing it. That's why I mentioned the pilot as a better alternative in
my opinion. It's the replacement of the passport, and slighty larger than a
passport, definately larger than the crv. Jackson racing also makes a great
supercharger for the crv if you're interested in making it quicker. you
said about 4600 for the passport trade in. I"d recommend keeping the crv
and adding the jackson instead of the passport.

just my $.02

Yes the 2002 CRV 5spd needs to be ordered in most cases, but if you
like your current CRV this is the way to go. I test drove the 2002
5spd and there are NO issues of power--it has plenty of pep compared
to the auto. I read somewhere that the Pilot will be out in June-July
and will NOT come with a 5spd connected to it's standard V6. Also,
it's a long shot but some Honda fan just might trade in their 02 CRV
for the new Pilot when it comes out, so keep your eyes open for good
deals. I suspect the pilot to be another very popular SUV as it is
based on the hugely successful Acura MDX, but cheaper. So if you want
to know just how big the pilot is going to be, take a look at the
MDX. the Pilot could possibly be a little bit longer.
