I have a 1997 Honda Civic CX 1.6L (base) 5spd manual with over 200k miles. The clutch has finally gone and the tramission is slipping away as well. I belive it is a counter shaft bearing. As this is my daily driver I need to swap the transmission over the weekend as I will have to drive it to work on Monday. I would like to get even better fuel economy.

Does any one know of a way to get a 5th gear or differential that will allow lower engine speed on the highway? A transmission swap (from a different model) would be prefered. I would also consider tearing into the bad trans that I pull out, replace some components and put it back in at a later date.

The old girl is in need of some repair and instead of going sporty, I'm going to try all out fuel economy.

Any help would be appreciated.

One way to increase your fuel economy would be to go full exhaust.. now this can be costly but it will save quite a bit of money in the long run.
If you buy headers, a high flow cat/full catback exhaust, larger exhaust piping, and a larger muffler.. this all helps to move gasses out of your engine a bit faster giving you hp gain and better gas millage.
