the wife just called me and said the CRV has the check engine light on and  the engine is idling real funny, I went and checked it and i suspect that timing belt might have broke. When you start it the engine idels real rough and the check engine light comes on. Anyone have anything like this happen? By the way the carv has 88,0000 miles and the timing belt was replaced at about 63,000 miles , ( i live in Arizona, so i follow the extreme maintenance scheldule, which recomended it be replaced at 60,000 miles. Any ideas??

Same thing happened to me...except the idle got worse over time. I took it to
the Honda dealer..the one on bell and 85th ave...and they adjusted the
valves...this is on my 2001 CRV with 53,000 miles on it..he said it was very
common to need an adjustment...I asked why wasn't that in the maintenance
schedule..he couldn't answer.

Well, I'd say that its not the timing belt, because if that breaks then
the engine won't run at all.

You need to get the error code from the ECU because there are several
things that could be wrong. Depending on your level of confidence with
working on cars you may or may not be better off just taking it to a
dealer or a shop. I have an SCS Service Connector, this is the 'tool'
that you need to check the engine codes on first gen CR-Vs without
using an OBD scanner. If you don't have one of these and a service
manual then trying to diagnose this yourself will probably be more
frustrating than its worth (communicating over the internet can
sometimes be slow), but I could look up the code for you in my manual
if you could check it.

The valves are covered in the maintenance schedule, it says "Check and
adjust if needed." I don't have my manual in front of me to tell you
the miles that this is indicated, but I know for sure that its on
there.

Maybe you've got a tight valve leading to a compression leak.
