Hi, I own an 89 accord lxi hatchback. We recently replaced the radiator, the fan motor (extremely expensive) feul filter. My car turns over but wont start. We've tried to start it with ether, but nothing works. I need my car back! Help would be greatly appreciated.

Fuel filter just replaced. Air filter seems fine. Battery tested and is a-ok. Have spark, but my husband says it doesnt seem like quite enough spark. Checked distributor cap and rotor, they seem ok... There wasnt problems before the car went down. The fuel pump seemed ok, but i think we'll check it again. Radiator developed a leak, and we replaced that. The engine turns over, but doesnt quite start. Gets close... Press the gas pedal twice before you start the car, and just try. Don't press the gas pedal more than 4 times, if you do don't press it again or you will flood the carb, so wait and try again in 5 minutes.

Hi, It may be your ignitor going bad. I believe it is located inside the distributor. This has been a problem for most from 89 - 91. Main symptom is that the engine cranks but does not start. Good luck. Wes and Rhonda

Rhonda, That's great you got your car started. For the overheating problem, did your husband bleed the water system after replacing the radiator? Bleeding the system is getting the air trapped from within the cooling system out typically stemming from draining the radiator. This procedure is done by locating the bleeder stem I believe maybe located just below the distributor. Check your manual to be sure. The other possibility is the thermostat may need to be replaced also. Good luck. Wes and Rhonda

Thanks, I'll check into that. I had a 3gee Prelude, whoa I loved that car. But the repairs were getting to be more than we could keep up with. Not the engine, it had 250k on it, and ran like a champ. But everything else was going wrong with the poor car. My accord is the hatchback, its... not the Prelude, but I'm trying to like it. *sigh* I got this because I was so impressed with my prelude. lol. *~* > If you want help on your 3gee just register on this site, dedicated to our > cars. I'll check about bleeding the system. What procedure is that? I've bled the clutch in my old Prelude, and bled brakes, but never the coolant system. We did replace the thermostat, it was stuck halfway between open and closed. No manual came with the car. We've had it only for 9 months. *~* > Rhonda, > > That's great you got your car started. The bleeding process is just loosening the bleeder valve and letting the fluid run until there is no visible air bubbles coming out. Tighten afterwards and top-off fluid. "version1.0@..."

Scanning over the repsonses I noted that the car started when the distributor cap and rotor were replaced. It's unusual for these to get so bad that they actually prevent the car from starting, and this suggessts POOR maintenance to me. I do not mean to be insulting, but if that is indicative of the car's history, then the overheating problem could easily be the result of a really old thermostat or coolant. Probably a cooling system flush should be done while replacing this stuff. Hoses replaced too.
