Lisette:
If the hatch-opening feature of the remote is working correctly (or at all,) the rear hatch can be opened by holding the appropriate button down for a FULL second or so. Make sure you are not stabbing it like a number button on a microwave. This is a radio-wave remote control, you don't have to point the remote at the vehicle (and you don't have to puss the button hard.)
The functional range of the remote is not a great distance, but should be about 30 feet or more.
If the rear hatch is still NOT opening, then I'd have to ask if the other buttons are working correctly: lock, unlock? (The same range limitations apply, of course.)
You received two remotes when you took possession of the CR-V. I'd test the second remote for proper functioning, too.
One battery (or remote) being bad -- possible. BOTH remotes being bad -- unlikely.
At some point (if NEITHER remote works properly, for example): your question becomes a warranty concern for the dealer.
Good luck.
