My father had an accident this weekend in his 02 CRV. He said he was
at a stop light and the engine started idling really fast and the car
jerked and started moving and he couldn't stop it. I know this
sounds fishy, but he said similar things have happened a few times
before, and he has even had it into the dealer for inspection, but
nothing was found. Apparently the police officer said he's
encountered that kind of problem before in accidents, so I'm curious
if anyone here has experienced it, or has heard of this being a
problem with the CRV's. My CRV has been great so far.

My friend's wife had the same problem. She ran into another car in a school parking lot. The vehicle was towed away and nothing was found to be wrong. Her's was a Ford Escape. Personally I think it's driver error. My grandfather had the same thing happen was his truck. He put it into reverse thinking it was in Drive and hit the gas. Boom, right into his house!. He knew what HE did wrong and wasn't afraid of admitting it. I think a lot of people that this happens to honestly believe they did nothing wrong, but more times then not it is the drivers error.

Your fathers description sounds like he had his foot on the brake and gas at the same time... the CR-V was fighting with its brakes and that's why it was jerking... as he pushed the brake harder he also pressed the gas harder.  Sound feasible??

I did find a couple times that my accelerator was sticking on, which can be
pretty scary. The culprit? The floor mat was positioned slightly off and
the accelerator was catching on it. This did not cause spontaneous
acceleration however.

Sure, I think that is feasible. And while he was telling me about
the accident, I imagined something like that actually happened. But
when he said it had happened before, I thought that maybe it could be
something else. I'll have to find out if when it happened before, if
he was stopped, or if it happened while in motion. Also, my mother
was in the car, and she believes that it was the car, and not driver
error. They're older, so I have to wonder sometimes.
