It's been quite a few years since I drove a standard regularly, but doesn't that grinding sound like it might be the transmission?

Are you referring to driving the 2000 Passport?

A growling or grinding noise when the clutch is engaged may be due to a bad transmission input shaft bearing.

Hi all, Okay, here is my story: Remember, how I hear the grinding noise everytime I turn the wheel for the first time? This is what I have done. I called Acura Canada, and they said that I was the only person with this complaint. They also said that if alot of people called them, they would check it out. Then I called Sterne Acura, which was extremely nice to me. I mentioned to them the problem, and the service manager there, told me that this is the first he heard. So, if we all make the effort just to pick up the phone and tell Acura canada what we think the problems are, they will try and look into that, I think. Anyhow, why has no one posted on how exactly the problem was fixed, which mechanic and in which dealership? Or maybe I missed the post? thanks, Amir.

They're trying to hide the defect to make you feel your car is the only one around with this problem. You're very lucky they actually spoke with you. I've called them twice...the first call was to complain about how my dealership scratched my car...second call was to complain they're unable to fix problems with my car after repeated visits. Honda just asked me to speak to the general and service manager to resolve the problem. They didn't even ask for the detail of my complain before they forced (sort of) me to hang up. Which number did you call? The one I called is Honda Public Relation. I told you in my last post...there is no fix for this problem yet. All civic/EL have this problem but the degree of grinding varies between different cars. So maybe some car's grinding are so minor that their owner probably won't even notice. I've driven 6 different ELs manufactured from Oct 00 to May 01 (5 of them loaners and 1 belongs to my friend) and a 2-dr Civic mfg. Mar 01...all of them made that same clicking/knocking sound when you turn the steering wheel. The best thing you can do now is wait...cuz the problem is not an instant concern to the car's safety. If you find it annoying just spray it with lube. I posted the details before...go check on the details.

Hi LawLaw, Well, I called the Acura Canada, I do not have the number with me right now, but can find out later when I get home. I thought I saw a post here by someone who said that they replaced both the right and left front coil, and it worked fine. Why just not replace the springs and then it would be okay? thanks, Amir.

If you can find the number for me that would be nice. But I was on the Acura web site and I was thinking the public relation is the rite number to call so I gave it a shot...but it didn't turn out too well. I know what they are talking about with the spring coil replacement. It is another problem/noise from our car. I have the same problem too...this one doesn't involve turning the steering wheel. What it does is the front suspension makes a loud "pop" sound when you go over a speed bump or any bump that involves extensive travel of your front suspension. This problem is not as common as the steering knocking/grinding problem...but my car has both.

Hi Lawlaw, Okay, the number I called is 416-284-8110, it is the number for local Acura automaker. Call them and tell them about the grinding noise and since you know more about it than me, maybe you can explain it to them better. It is also hard for me to believe that Acura engineers do not know about this grinding sound. I think they test the cars under extreme conditions, and they must have picked it up. In my opinion, they knew about it and decided that although it only happens once you start the car, it is perfectly safe, otherwise, they would not want within the 3 year warranty to replace all the cars. Dont you think so too? Anyhow, I think one of these days I would go with a mechanic to check it out. thanks, Amir.
