We have a 2000 EX auto and get 20-21 in the city and 24 highway ave 70-75mph.
The car is designed to run on regular gas. You wont benefit from using higher octane unless you advance the timing a few degrees. Then you will have to use higher octane but you will get better performance and gas mileage.
There was an article written by Oscar Jackson (jackson racing) in the spring issue of "honda tuning" magazine (I think it was spring issue).
He said honda distributors have a negative, neutral and positive setting for the timing. Usually they are set for negative or neutral to run on regular gas.
If set on the "+" setting, you end up advancing the timing several degrees and have to use Super unleaded. The result however was a noticeable gain in Horsepower and torque and increased fuel mileage. The article tested the theory on a 2000 CRV and they got about 4mpg increase, more than enough to offset the increased cost of the fuel. (this was done BEFORE gas prices went nuts though).
Ive been wanting to try it but forgot to buy the magazine and I think its off of store shelves. Not sure. The article was burried in the back.
