You guys are right about honest mechanics/garages. They are definitely hard to come by.
As for tire fixes, I've had punctures on the bottom (not side walls) that held up very good after the fix. Yup, cost me $20 before but after looking at how it was done, I conclude that its the same if I were to do it. Therefore, I went ahead and did it myself.
Now, the reason why I choose to fix it instead of buying an inexpensive tire is because the spare is after all a spare. In my years of driving, I only have 2 flats ever. The chances of getting a flat is relatively low and some may say that its when you need the tire most that counts. But hey, I'd use the fixed spare to drive to the nearest gas station/garage to get a new tire right away. Sure beats even driving down the freeway with that tiny 13" spare that most cars have.
Okay, when the time comes to replace the old tires in the CRV, I'm going to get some good tires to go all around and move the older spare back to its original place. I don't rotate the spare as part of rotation because it would lead to uneven wear times for some tires. Therefore I choose to leave it alone.
Some of you may disagree but that's okay. I just wanted to share my experience with tire fixing that's all. BTW, I also have a can of flatfix just in case I run into a puncture in the middle of a cold rainy night. That should hold and inflate the tire up till I get to somewhere safe.
Have a good weekend and Happy CRVing folks! Bing
