Dear all,

Please let me know if you have any suggestions about buying an extended
warranty for Honda Odyssey.

I just bough a 2000 Honda Odyssey LX with 38,000 miles on it from a GM
dealer in Memphis, TN.

When I bought the van, the dealer wanted me to spend $1,500 for a GM
warranty, i.e., 3 years/36,000 miles. I plainly refused. The dealer then
offered me the same term warranty but only for $1,100 from Wynn's Extended
Care warranty. I then bought the Wynn's Extended Care warranty.

Unfortunately, when I contacted the only Honda dealer/service station in my
town, the service station told me that it could not and would not honor any
third party warranties because it sells Honda extended warranty. The service
station says that I must pay any repair with my own money and then get a
reimbursement from the third party.

After researching the Internet, I found many places offer cheaper (although
not always better) warranties than the Wynn's Extended Care. I can get
anywhere from $800 to $1,600 for additional 7 years/100,000 miles
(odometer reading) extended warranty. Therefore, I have decided to cancel
the Wynn's Extended Care.

I drive only about 7,000 miles/year. I am thinking that it may be better for
me to buy a 7 year warranty rather than a 3 year warranty because during the
next 3 years my odometer reading may be only 38,000 miles (original
mileage) + 3 x 7,000 miles = 38,000 + 21,000 = 59,000 miles. I do not think
that my Odyssey will break down with only 59,000 miles on it.

I also found a warranty coverage from Honda warranty
http://www.hondawarranty.com/cov.cfm
However, it seems to me that the Honda warranty only covers mechanical breakdown but
not wear and tear. For example, the Honda warranty covers timing belt only
if the belt fails. I am also not sure who run the Honda warranty website.

Someone told me that Honda has just extended the mileage allowance for the Honda-Care warranty from 36K to 42K. It means that my van is still eligible for the the Honda-Care warranty, because the mileage is 38K

Should I buy an extended warranty? If yes, should I buy a Honda warranty or
a third party warranty? Where is the best place to buy a warranty?

Thanks for your info.

asyamil@...
