what does it mean when your exhaust makes those popping sounds? not all the time, and not too often, but enough to annoy me. it didn't always do this. (the exhaust has been modified, what mods? i dunno!!)

1) is it bad? more $$ i need to spend??
2) how bad is it if i ignore it?

thanks.

1)No clue
2)No clue

You need to be more specific.

Exactly when does the exhaust make those popping sounds? Find out what kind of exhaust you have on there. What other mods have been done to the engine? It might not be the exhaust if it's backfiring.

okay, more specific...

it sounds like a gunshot, but not as loud. it happens when i'm stuck in traffic ..stop and go situations. as i slowly accelerate, it makes that sound. also, i just found out that the muffler was replaced, not modified so i was incorrect about mods on the exhaust.

there is no other work on the engine. all stock. i hope that was more specific. Much better.

If you're sure it's from the exhaust, and not something else popping (like a suspension piece) then there's basically two main things to check.

There may be a hole in the exhaust somewhere that's upsetting the exhaust flow causing it to pop. Shouldn't be hard to find if that's the cause. One thing you could do is let the car idle and hold a towel in the tailpipe for a few seconds to block it and see if the exhaust comes out anywhere else. (Don't block the pipe for more than a couple of seconds though.)

The more likely (and complicated) cause is that your engine is running rich causing backfires. You may just need a tune-up. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and check the timing. It could be something worse, like a faulty O2 sensor, but your check engine light should come on if that's the problem.

Look at those possible problems and let us know what you find.

I HAD A 91 CRX IT HADE SOME POPPING SOUNDS COMEING FROM IT ALL IT IS IS THE BACK PRESHER FROM THE ENGIEN TO THE EXHAUST SO MOST LIKELY IT'S NOT MAJOR. BUT CHECK YOU DISTRIBUTER CAP FOR CRACKES AND ROTER BUTTON FOR LOSENES IF SO REPLACE IT . IT WILL CAUSE IT TO BOGG DOWN LIKE YOU RUNNING OUT OF GAS
