Hi,

I just bought my new 2002 CRV ex this past Wed. and I just love him:)
But I have a question.....
.... on my way home from work today I noticed that the engine light
came on. I checked in my Manuel and it said that if the light comes
on it means that there is a problem with one of the emission sensors
(my gas cap is securely on). So I called my Honda dealer and they
told me that all the new CRV's are having this problem and that I
shouldn't worry. They said that the Honda engineers are working on it
(it may take a month to fix) and that it is a computer glitch,
something to do with the oxygen sensor and that I can continue to
drive the vehicle without worry that I'm damaging my new engine. I
still made an appointment to have it checked out anyway next Monday
because it makes me a bit nervous. They also told me that every 2002
CRV owner will be receiving a notice from Honda corporation advising
them what to do.


Anyone else have this problem? If so were they told what I was? I
just want to make sure that I'm getting the correct information.

Well, not with my crv, but I had a 2000 Jetta and it did the same
thing. They gave me this bit about not turning the gas cap all the
way till it clicked. My o2 sensor went out shortly after my warranty
did and it cost me $400 I think. The jetta's had a big problem with
that. Needless to say after my VW jetta horror stories, I traded for
a CRV SE back in 2001. VW later sent out a recall after I had traded
it. I'm sure Honda will take care of it for free if anything does
happen.

I got mine on Dec.5, 02. Now it has over 14,000 km and never had the
engine light come on.

My Manual CR-V EX has 400 miles on it and no such problem.

My V did the same thing. I took it to the Dealer and they said
it was an oxygen sensor. After waiting 2 months for the part
(back ordered) they called me in to do the work but also told me
of an email they just got from Honda. Evidently, this issue is
pretty widespread. Honda claims swapping out the Oxygen sensor
may or may not fix the problem, what they are testing is the
software in the computer. They seem to believe there is an
issue there, which would consist of only a program
upgrade.......but they are still investigating. FYI, I had my
O2 sensor changed about a month ago, and the light hasn't
returned. Good luck and let me know if your dealership tells
you anything differently.

Thanx Don for the additional information. I have an appointment
tomorrow with my dealership and I will post what they find. The good
news is that the light went out and hasn't come back on. They told me
that might happen, I'm just glad that I don't have to look at it
since it really bugged me.

Yeah, mine would also go out. And then come back on.....lol

I did find out (the hard way) that 2 or 3 "clicks" of the gas cap are
insufficient. Half a turn works for me now!

I did got my O2 sensor replaced a month ago in my 2002 CRV EX but
once again this past weekend the engine light came ON.

I tried many clicks but still it is ON. I will drive few days and
then if it still remains ON I will see my dealer.

Sounds like a computer problem, as Honda Corporate has described
to me. Although mine has not come back on. I've heard, if it
is a gas cap, you have to go through a couple tanks of gas to
reset that light.

7000 miles and no light.
I am carfull with the cap tightening.
It does take both a certain amount of driving and a certain amount of
starts to reset the light, so be paitent.
Could still be software or bad O2 sensors.
Also BAD software might work just fine, but be over sensitive to
problems. The fix might not change anything except when the light
comes on.
