Hey, does anybody here have one of those portable DVD players in their car? I'm seeing those everywhere lately and I'm wondering how many people out there actually have one. Is it worth the money? Do you actually use it?

Since I'm the only one who drives my car regularly, it's not worth the money -- when would i use it?? If I had kids, I'd probably invest in one, tho.

They are great for people with kids and handy if, for whatever reason, you find yourself sitting in the car bored. Other than that watch movies in your living room....with the engine off!

I personally do not. I find it very distracting to drive at night when other drivers have them in their cars, so I don't think they're safe.

I wonder if some people use them to play only audio while driving?

Isn't DVD audio 24 bit technology while a CD is only 16 bit?

We thought getting one for our daughter for when we take road trips, but then I noticed just how distracting they are at night too. It almost seems a safety hazard. I think I will just invest in a portable dvd player that doesn't mount to the ceiling of the car and can used anywhere and hand held.

I was on a short shuttle trip in a van once, and there was a ceiling mounted DVD screen.

In that case it was just a few minutes, but I think it would be fine for passengers in the rear of the van on a longer trip, especially.

I guess it would be even less distracting if the people watching were using headphones, too.

I don't have one yet but we are thinking about getting a couple for the boys. That way they don't get so bored on the longer trips we take from time to time.

I saw someone at work with a handheld Sony DVD player that was quite good. It folded up flat with the screen facing out and had two headphone jacks.

Maybe something like that would be better than one dedicated to a vehicle?

Thank you so much for that recommendation. That actually sounds like a better option for the boys. I am going to go price them now. Thanks again.

I think I've seen them for about $130 or less.

The price on these has really come down in the last couple of years.
