Hi,

I just happened to be surfing by when I noticed your post.  My wife's 98 CRV also has a transmission problem.  Actually it's the torque converter in the tranny.  The dealer just gave me the runaround so now I'm fighting with American Honda.

Here's the text of the letter I wrote them:

I to have a 97 c.r.v. with this problem. Mine has
89,000 miles. It started at 65.000 when I hadthe trans
fluid changed for the third time. Mine is way out of
wartranty so I'm sure I will have to eat the cost of a
new converter.

Roenick,

At the dealership the service writer gave my wife a service notice about a known problem with CRV automatic transmissions shifting.  That was after 3 months and several visits. The dealer knew about the tranny problem and the symptoms they just didn't disclose it to us.  The dealer was not very honest.

Rick,

The dealer also tried to get me to change the fluid 3 times to try to correct the problem.  I think it was just a way to soak me for more money.  I'm very dissatisfied how Honda is handling this problem.

Roenik,

I hope I have better luck with the dealer I'm taking the car to tomorrow.  I'm going to keep an open mind because American Honda say's “At American Honda, there's nothing we value more than our customers”.  I guess I'll find out if they really mean it.

This trans problem sounds somewhat like I am experiencing with my
CRV. Ever since about 4,000 miles the truck feels like it has a
shake but only under accelleration. Its mild but its there. the
harder you accellerate the stronger the vibration and its a bit more
noticeable when turning. Originally I thought it was just the 4cyl
motor working hard but now Im not so sure. My wife drives it 95% of
the time and hasnt noticed it but I do whenever I drive it.

Definitely let us know what happens with this.

thanks
Jeff

well I hope its just the tires or ME but I think I have the
beginnings of the same torque converter problem. With any luck if it
is that, It will surface before the warranty runs out. If not, maybe
I will get an extended warranty or something just in case.

Thanks

Jeff,

At what mileage did this start? I have a 2000 CR-V with 11000 miles on
it a we tow it behind a motorhome. I feel a little hopping when I pull away
from the light. Maybe it is the transmission or not , but whatever the case
Honda need to rectify this situation. Look on lemonaidecars.com there used
to be a section on how to submit a formal complaint and get action from the
dealer, why should "we" cr-v owner bite the bullet.

To unsubscribe is different from many sites, but it is very simple.

Please read the following to determine the method best for you:

You can send a message to honda-crv-unsubscribe@egroups.com and type

UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject. You do not need to type anything in the

body. You will then receive a message from egroups asking you to confirm

that you actually want to unsubscribe.  Just reply to that message
and

you will be unsubscribed.

Better still, go to egroups.com, login, then unsubscribe.

Best yet, go to egroups.com, login, and then edit your profile. I would

recommend this method, because you can stay subscribed and still have

the messages available to you when you want them, rather than receiving

every message when it is sent.  Many subscribers find this to
be the

preferred method.

I guess I noticed it around 2,000 miles. Im at 10,000 now and its
still there

and NOW its beginning to downshift from 2nd to 1st abruptly at random
intervals. Of course it wont do it for the dealer when they drive
it. Mostly it happens when stopping, particularly when going down
hill. Im just waiting for it to get worse before I go back again...

why2kmax,

The original dealer I was taking my CRV to could not see the problem either.  I have been fighting with the 1st dealer over this for about 6 months.  The only way I've gotten any action was to write a letter and fax it to American Honda.  The 2nd dealer I took it to drove it about a mile and said the problem was the torque converter.  Of course that was after American Honda arraigned for me to take it to the 2nd dealer and told them all about my complaint.  I'm now waiting for American Honda to get back to me about getting it fixed.

I suggest if you can't get satisfaction from a Honda dealer you contact American Honda Customer Relations and force the issue.

After all, when you pay a lot of hard earned money for a vehicle is it fair to get stuck with something defective?

Geez Paul thats a shame. Its like dealing with GM or chrysler!

If this does develop into a problem though, it will have been the
first really serious one Ive had with a Honda in the last 5 that Ive
owned. Good luck with your claim and I hope I run into an easier
time.

Thanks

Jeff,

I'll bet your previous Honda's were Civics or Accords. They've been
making those for years and have them down pat. Like I told my
wife, "never buy a vehicle for the first couple of model years."
That's when all the real problems are found. In the first few years
real customers use the car in real life situations and find all the
problems that weren't found during the development and factory
testing.

Yes Paul, they were. 85 CRX, 88 CRX, 90 civic SI, 90 Accord EX, 94
Civic EX and all pretty much flawless BUT all 5 speeds.

I always had reservations about buying a japanese Automatic. It
always seems that American Autos and japanese 5 speeds are the best
for reliability but not so much the other way around.

Since its based on the civic and built in Japan, I didnt expect many
problems if any, except for possibly the transmission and drivetrain
(excluding the engine). Sorry to see I might be right. Keep us
posted.

My Nissan 240sx convertible's automatic (they didn't have sticks in the
convertibles?) is exceptionally strong with 86,000 miles on the odometer.

Ironically, Nissan had problems with the 5-speeds, so that may be the reason
they did not include the 5-speed in the 92-94 convertible production cars.
The convertible also weighs 3200lbs !!, the 5-speeds were terrible for these
years in everything I can find to read.
