Recently sent to a concerned CR-V automatic owner, thought I'd pass on my reply here too;

Thankfully, nothing is wrong with your CR-V!!  The automatic transmission has grade-logic control.  Remember, the CR-V has a very high red-line and inorder to keep the CR-V from running at low rpms when under load the transmission holds the third gear.  Low rpm is more damaging to the engine than high rpm, thus the hold feature.  You find this situation in Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas to be more pronounced due to smaller engines being fitted with automatics.
Big 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder engines etc. have the capability of achieving much higher torque at low rpms when under load, thus they are able to hold overdrive without downshifting more so than the V.
Rest assured nothing is wrong with your CR-V.

Sadly, this why my CR-V was purchased with a 5-Speed!!
