I just bought a 2001 CRV. I love it, but was hoping for a little more power and
a friend told me
that they sell computer chips that can add 20 hp. Is this true? If anybody out
there has done
this and can offer some advice, I'd appreciate it.

I dont know from experience with Hondas but I do know that GM cars
from 1994 onward, have a reprogrammable EEPROM (Powertrain Control
Moduel/PCM) instead of a repaceable chip. I would suspect by now
Hondas are also reprogrammable. You probably wouldnt get 20 hp from
it unless the programming was very conservative to begin with but it
would be a pretty good benefit. Let us know if you find anything.

i know that there is company out there called Jet Performance that makes one
for the V...the specs on the chip is almost identical to the Integra...since
the engines are closely related....i'm not sure on the website though....but
i know for sure that they make them for the CR-V.....

I cant speak for imports but JET has a horrible reputation with the
Impala SS and F-body community. Or at least they did 2-3 years ago.
their "chips" never made any more power (saw at least 5 or 6 dyno
runs on different cars with them) It would just try to fool your
computer into thinking it was colder outside than it was causing it
to dump more fuel into the system. Perhaps they have changed their
ways but I wouldnt reccomend them.

Ive talked to a few people and they are pretty sure we have
programable PCMs at least in the 00-01 CRV. Havent found anyone who
knows for sure and havent gone to honda to ask either.

A few thoughts:
IF the CRV is a programable PCM then chances are that the computer is
going to handle just about every engine function including the auto
trans and speedo functions. R&D to make a chip for it is going to be
expensive and the market for aftermarket programs for CRVs is
probably pretty small. You might be able to get an Integra program
installed BUT it will have integra gearing, shift points, redline etc
etc which wont work well on the CRV. Unless of course the person
takes the time to do it right and just piece together a CRV drive
train program with Integra fuel map and spark curve etc...

thoughts ideas?

I have been reading the e-mails regarding the chipping of a CR-V. From what I know, Honda has the most proprietary computer systems in the automotive realm. You may want to look into information available at Hondata we site. They have done many years of research into modifying Honda's. They have been able to build on the programming of the CPU's instead of reprogramming them.

What ever you find out, let us know
