i echo andre's statement on catalytic converter's.... just make sure it's street legal!! :) don't get a straight-through pipe, unless you intend to use your car for off-road only. those are cheap, but is it worth to you to not pass an emissions test? although it may give better performance, remaining street legal is a much better trade off. and there are still really good aftermarket converters. i have the one from "Magnaflow" and am totally happy w/it. i noticed a definite improvement in power immediately after install (not ground- breaking, but noticeable). but you may also have to get it installed at a shop that does or is willing to do custom exhaust work, as there may be some welding involved - depending on what you get. most aftermarket stuff will fit pretty much to OEM points, but not all. make sure of fitment BEFORE purchase so you don't get screwed! and know how much you're willing to pay for installation, if any (or if you can just do it yourself). i have a '98 civic ex coupe, and i wanted the welding just to make sure everything was lined up perfectly. it didn't cost much though, and it was quick. just make sure if there are spring-loaded bolts that connect on either side (to the header on one side and cat-back exhaust pipe on other) that they're properly tightened. if not, they'll make a really annoying sound @ idle. and BE CAREFUL w/the O2 sensors! i don't know for sure, but i think that many civic's have what i have: 2 O2 sensors. if they break during install (b/c you have to work close to them and with them) there's almost no way to know, unless your engine light goes on after you finish. it's just a pain to deal with, although not terribly complicated. if you ever run into needing to replace those sensors, don't take it to the dealer. they will screw you on the price of parts and install. get something like BOSCH replacement parts (big OEM supplier) and still have piece of mind, then talk to a mechanic (or do it yourself) who's willing to work with new OEM parts that he personally didn't sell you. also, you want to consider (if you're going for aftermarket performance) what kinds of mods. may connect to this converter - like a new header and/or cat-back. why? b/c just slapping parts together don't make for performance. the wrong header can actually REDUCE horsepower at low or high RPM's. the same goes i think with cat-back exhausts too (diameter too big, and not enough back-pressure; too small, and basically you negate most performance +'s from other mods. forward of the pipe - back to stock or worse). i have the Greddy EVO cat-back exhaust and DC Sports 4-1 header on my car. i am pleased with their performance (and they don't make my car sound like a bumble-bee on the road - kind of a throaty sound). both companies make various models and i would trust them for most applications. if you're interested in knowing more about specifically aftermarket applications for exhaust mods., feel free to post here again. take care!
