Man, i bought my civic in 00' for economical purposes, and it sounds like I should of just bought something else. I just got quote from a local dealer here in houston that it will cost me $1800 to fix my AC on my 2year old civic with 40,000miles. I got in a car wreck about 1 year ago and the person hit the person car who i hit had a trailer hitch which slid directly in the same area that the compressor is located(front right side if you were standing in front of the car) and I saw the damaged after it was over and it's the same area. They already said they couldn't do anything because the compressor wasn't replaced. I hadn't really used my AC much till recently because I used my windows more often until the (manual)window in my car broke, at 40,000miles, and I wanted them manual to avoid problems with automatic breaking. Now at 43,000miles they claim I need a whole new AC system, because of something they call 'black death' which apparently is when the compressor locked up it spewed a black oil inside the tubes that held the freon. The only reason I brought it to dealer was to see if they could do warranty work, but apparently I'm too far out:( Needless to say I'm taking it elsewhere to get a cheaper price. This really sucks! Sorry for the misspellings, I'm not a big car person...
