my mantienence required light on my 98 hatchback is red...is there something wrong...what should i do? maybe it just needs an oil change?

that means you need to take it to the dealer. most likely an over-all check-up like what they do to a 60-K mile check up...      they can clear that to green again once they finish with the

That's exactly why it's there!  To get you into the dealer, but the messed up thing is that it's simply a mileage meter.  If you have your car maintained then I would press your key into that little slot on the gauge cluster (where the speedo is) and forget about it.  It has no diagnostic properties at all!

yeah. i was freaked the first time it happened to me too (thought my engine was falling apart, or something). i just ignore it and maintain my ride. you should be okay. as andre said, they just installed that just to have you come into the dealer at certain intervals, nothing more (but you personally would want to pay attention to major points of mileage maintenance).
