Subject : CRV with cylinder valve problem

Has anyone had a CRV that needed valves or a head replaced? Mine is a 98
with 78K.

I have a burned exhaust valve on a 1999 CRV with only 48,000 miles. The
owner's handbook schedule of maintenance does not call for these valves
to be adjusted until 105,000 miles!!! I think Honda has a problem with
these, but not enough people have complained yet to force a recall.

All I know is that they are mechanical valvs and need to be adjusted
every 30,000 miles

The person who said the valves need to be adjusted every 30,000 miles is
wrong (according to Honda's own owners manuel). They actually should not
need adjustment until over 100K miles unless they are noisey. I think
this is a factory defect.

Mine is a '99 with only 48K on it and one of my valves is bad also --

My '99 CRV has 67K on it. I was running errands one day and the Check
Engine light came on - took it in, and also turns out that my #2 and #4
cylinders were misfiring, and so they recommended to have the valves
adjusted.

While the manual SAYS they should be adjusted @ 105K miles, the guy at
the dealer said this has been a recurring problem with CRV's and that
they are now recommending valves be adjusted every 30K miles.

To make matters worse, the valve adjustment didn't fix my problem - now
they are doing a leak down test for all of the cylinders as they suspect
that one is burnt out. The damage: $1100.

The problem is not only with the CRV's; the Civics are also having this
same issue. Honda is offering to repair Civics who have the same problem
for FREE. I hope the same fate lies for us CRV owners!!

I have a 2000 CR-V with just under 50,000 miles. The check engine light
came on and stayed on after I tuned the engine. I took it in to the
dealer and $182.00 later they told me a valve had tightened and burned.

I am a mechanic and am well aware valves do not tighten. It looks like
Honda Motors is going to force their customers to absorb the cost of
their mistake.

This is the last Honda I will ever own.

Looks like more and more people are having the same problem with the
CR-V's. I have a 2001 and less than 50K.

Went to the dealer and spoke to a few techs there, all said Honda has a
problem there, no recalls, no technical bulletins either, guess Honda
wants to consumer to pay, well Honda, my son just sold his '99 Civic and
got himself a Jetta, I will replace the burnt valves and then I will
sell it off, NO more Honda's for this family, I will certainly spread
the word about Honda and their lack of cutomer service and reliability.

The tech told me that they are starting to check the valves @ 15K cause
they found some with less than 15K with burnt valves. Mine never really
idled smooth from day one, guess they didn't adjust them right from the
factory, did they ?
