I have a Honda cr-v 2001 and the brake light lit up on the dash board
this morning. I am sure that I do not need brakes. They have been
checked.
I open the car to check the brake fluid levels and was not able to
open the lid. When I came back into the car the break light was off
and has not come back on sinse.
Can anyone tell me what could have happened?
Is there anything else I could check without being ripped off at the
local repair place or at the dealer?
Thanks,
Lissette

I have had the same problem in my 2000, I thought it was "cold" temps. It
keeps going out on my way to the dealing so I too am interested in what
others have to say.

How long has it been since your brake fluid has been changed?

Its possible that if this happened when it was really cold that you've
got water in your brake lines somewhere.

I would recommend changing the brake fluid. Its a pain, but it is
relatively cheap and an extremely important maintenance step.

Hope this helps.

Later,

Check the parking brake handle and make sure it is all the way down, around 60k miles I started to have the same problem and wiggling the parking brake handle made it go away.  The next time I had the oil changed I had them check the cable and it was a little stretched, they tightened it up and I haven't had a problem since.

A lot easier than changing the brake fluid.  This was a discussion here about a year ago, and this ended up being the problem for about everyone.
