I was driving with my friend the other day in a S10, which is a stick...

I noticed him shifting out of frist soon (a lot faster than my V would shift out
of first)...

He said that he has to shift at about 15mph... I told him that when i have raced
my engine off a light or somthing.. i am usually at 35 when it
shifts out...(this is of course very high rpms) (I dont usually do this just as
a note b/c I dont want to burn up the tranny)

is this normal? (2001,EX Auto trans.. if that matters)

Notice at what spped it shiffs when you are driving "normal".
Probably not much over 15MPH.
Also, 1st on a auto is not as low as 1st in a manual because the
torque converter does the job of lowering the effective gear ration
when first strating off.

American engines tend to have a very low redline. Most american engines are
larger (6 or 8 cyl) and are built with more torque than hp and gain nothing
but extended stress on a motor that's not built for higher revs. Honda
engines tend to have more hp than torque and gain a lot of hp in the higher
rev range. Thus it is benefical and often required to rev it to it's higher
limit to be able to take advantage of it's full potential. S-10 is a pickup
built for loads and towing which will benefit from a very low first gear to
help starting out with extra weight. IT also has 5 gears vs your auto V 4
speed trans which requires more separation between gears since there arent'
as many. Check your friends rpm limit (redline) on his s-10 it's probably
in the 5000 or 5500 range depending on the motor.
