You obviously haven't had an automatic fail on you before. In my experience, manuals are much more robust and give early warning of impending failure. A properly maintained manual will generally outlast a properly maintained automatic, as automatics have friction elements inside that will wear eventually, plus various pumps and valves, none of which a manual transmission will have.
Regarding putting in a manual transmission, often times, many auxilliary parts (pedals, gauge clusters, interior trim pieces) will have to be changed as well. This raises the cost and complexity of the swap, often to the point where it is cheaper to just go out and buy the car you want to begin with.
