Hello everyone (and again sorry about my poor English),
Now that I completed 3 weeks with my '93 Civic, I realized that something
might be wrong with the car.
I was thinking that the fuel consumption was too high for the car (11 km/l),
I thought it might be my foot (too heavy) so I simply forgot about it.
However, yesterday I filled up the fuel tank, and tha strange is that the
guy at the gas station didn?t fill it up to the top, but only until the pump
"locked up" (which is in fact the correct procedure).
Then I went to my girlfriend?s house and we went to the mall, when I parked
there, there was a gasoline smell in the air, then I looked at my car, and
it was it... the gas had leaked through the cap... :( It was little gas,
indeed, but it happened. The paint near the gas cap was wet with gas.
Later at night, after I left my girlfriend home, I went back to my place,
and after a high-speed curve to the right (which means: the fuel went to the
left, which is the side of the car that has the fuel cap) , the fuel smell
came in again. And that time, the tank fuel meter went down a little bit
(but a noticeable ammount) after the curve. When I parked at home, there
were again signs of a gas leak from the fuel cap. The paint was wet with the
gasoline.
That explains (in part) why I was sensing gasoline smell after some
high-speed curves.
Today, I decided to take a look at the fuel cap. First: when I pulled out
the cap, there was pressure coming from inside the tank , as if it were
completely sealed (as it should be). The rubber band around the plastic cap
seems OK, no fissures at all, it isn?t "dried up", no cracks... It seems to
be perfectly O.K. .
However, I noticed a round-shaped hole beneath the fuel inlet. It seems as
if it is supposed to be there, but it also seem as it is missing some part,
such as a rubber cap or something. So I ask help for hatchback 92~95 Civic
owners to check their fuel inlet for that "hole", I need to know if it
should be there or if someone just drilled it in my car. I think there is
definitely something wrong with my car, and that?s making him drink too much
fuel. I think it is in fact spilling the fuel it drinks over the table
(road) :)
I ask for any help, even ideas, of what I should check out to "kill" the
leak, as fuel leaking from my tank will not ruin only my car?s perfect
painting, as it will ruin my bank account as well.
Attached to this message there are 4 pictures of my fuel inlet. The first
one (cap1.jpg) has the "mystery hole" marked. The second, is the cap itself,
which seems perfect. The third, is the fuel inlet without the cap, and the
fourth, is a picture of the hole.
