I own a 99 cr-v with about 70,000 miles. About a month ago my cr-v
began stalling when it was cold. I would start the engine, and when
I would reach a stop sign it would stall. Over the past month it
has become worse, having the tendency to stall now if put in drive.
I took it to the dealership and they suggested that a replace the
pcv valve. Knowing how wasy this is, I told the service man that I
would do it myself. About 10 minutes later I received a phone call
from the dealership informing me that they had found another
problem, and that I now needed a valve adjustment. Feeling that I
was being schemed, I told him that I would do it myself, and left it
at that. After speaking to mechanic relatives/friends I came to the
conclusion that the valve adjustment was a way to make some money.
I purchased the PCV valve and replaced it and it did not fix the
problem. Last night, my check engine light came on...

So here are all of the symptoms

-stalling when put in drive, and stops stalling after driving about
2 mile (it will even stall if I crank the steering wheel in park!)

-Idles really low... When stopping, the rpm's bottom out and it
feels as though the car is going to stall. This does not stop.

-Lost about 20-25 mile per tank.

-Check engine light is on.

I have replaced the PCV valve, as well as the fuel filter. I do not
trust the dealership. Can anyone help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Damian

Yes I did replace the fuel filter. I did that before taking it to
the dealership, and them suggesting pcv valve replacement. Sorry
that I left that out... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

hi i have 98 cr-v with exact same faults bar the engine check light
being on.
The other thing i have on my honda is that is LPG converted. It does
the same thing with both gas and petrol.
The only thing left for me to do now is to check either the water or
power steering pumps to see if either or both is starting to seize up
and so sapping power at low revs.
One thing i have noticed is that the steering is getting heavy at
cold temps and the engine revs drop quite a lot .have you had this at
all ?
i am going to try later today or tomorrow to see if it is either of
these if you have any luck can you post me a reply

I had the stalling problem on my 2001 Ex. While driving on the freeway when my
engine light came on smoke started coming out of the muffler. Found out that the
valves were too tight and it would cost a fortune to fix. The warranty just
ended, but good thing I bought an extended warranty from my credit union.

No problems after getting the valves fixed.

I have a 2001 CR-V...and had similar problems.
they did a valve adjustment and it worked fine. Nothing was said about the PCV
valve...
I changed my plugs, and fuel filter, also put in some of that fuel injector
cleaner stuff...didn't help. The RPMs were low...and eventually,it started to
stall....quite frequently.
Gas mileage suffered, and there was a loss of power.
I would look into the valve adjustment...just ask questions to see exactly why
it needs the adjustment,...the before and afters....

The valve adjustment was not expensive at all....I thought it would be
worse...but they did use the "valve too tight" explanation. The dealer said it
usually requires adjustment around that time (60,000 miles) I said it didn't
say anything in the preventative maintenance section about valve adjustments. I
was told that this is a very common problem....

Looks like valve is the only thing you haven't touched. It not an
easy DIY-job, but with proper tools it is doable. The dealer here was
asking $140+ for that and I politely refused.

Let us know how it goes....

Hi,

I realized your going to adjust those valves already. Just wanted
to mention that it did work for me. My RPMs haven't come up to the
original spec, but my check engine light has gone out, the gas
mileage improved a great deal and the engine is running much
smoother for it.

well, it worked! My car is running normal again. Each of the 4
exhauast valves are coupled, and all four had at least one port that
was tighten, some up to 1.5 turns! I also changed my plugs, just so
y'all know. Thanks for all the replies!
