Dear Car Mechanics/Experts,
Can someone give me car repair advise regarding the replacement of my
head gasket, which just blew in my 1982 Honda Civic DX 1500 due to a
one-time overheating:
I've been told that sometimes when a head gasket blows the head can
also be cracked (which, however, can only be determined after half of
the labor, when the head has already been taken off). 1) Is that
true? 2) Does anybody know how seldom or often a cracked head occurs
simultaneously with a blown head gasket? ?and 3) if there is a
quicker, less expensive way to find out?
(I'm asking this trying in order to assess how big of a risk it would
be to hope that the head gasket would be the only part that needs to
be replaced if I had a mechanic work on the head). (I've already
determined that a new engine would not be an option. Either I have
only the head gasket replaced or the car junked at this point).
Thanks for any advise you can give me to make an informed decision on
that! Also, if you can tell me how cheap and where (in the San
Francisco Bay Area) I could get a head for my gasket if I needed one,
I'd appreciate that too!
Peter
