I had my 98 CRV in for the 30K mile service. Originally the dealer wnated 275.00 which I thought was high plus they wanted to do things that were not required. So they agreed to follow the owners manual recommendation and charged my 150.00 and some change. This was done following the Normal Service:
oil and filter change, tire rotation, new spark plugs, AC filter and air filter changed, plus all other checks as required.
I was glad they would work with me on the price and what was really necessary. I saved over 100.00 this way.

I don't believe the maintenance schedule is entirely necessary. Lots of the stuff sounds detailed and time consuming, but it's essentially checking that there are no seals or hoses leaking. Any good mechanic will do that for you for way less than Honda will charge, and contrary to what they say, any work or inspection keeps the warranty valid as long as you get it done by a lisenced mechanic and keep the receipt.

I have called two local dealers for 30,000 mile service on my '98 EX. One quoted $390, the other $310. This is in the St. Louis, MO area. It seems a bit high to me. Any thoughts?

I would say stick with what you are happy with. If they give you cause to try somewhere else, by all means do so, but often times they will go the extra step for a regular customer, and that is value you cannot find everywhere.

Hello Curt, I had Frank Leta in St. Louis do my 30k in Feb. of '99 ['98 EX. I now have 98k]. The bill was $363.68. I have had zero problems w/ the car or Leta. I usually let them do the "big" PM's and I change the oil myself in-between. I am due shortly for my timing belt/ H2O pump replacement and Leta is $650; Meyer in O'Fallon, IL is $450; and a local private Honda shop is $298. Hope that helps. Terry

All three places I talked to mentioned the timing belt, water pump, and an installation kit. The pump by itself was pretty pricey. All 3 places also said the belt was due @ 90,000 but the manual said 105,000, I believe. I have no desire to have a timing belt break, as I have experienced that pleasure w/ another car. Best regards.

Generally (other cars I have owned) the water pump is relatively cheap (around $100). It is very difficult and expensive to replace because you have to remove all of the belts and other stuff just to get to it. All of that work is already done when replacing the timing belt. Better to invest the money to replace a part early rather than paying for the much more expensive labor at a later date.
