Changed my oil this past week-end. I am a little disappointed though that on
a Newly Re-Designed (& Flipped) engine they still managed to find the most
inconvenient spot for the oil filter.

My 1986 SAAB had a filter which was accessible by just opening the hood!

As was the clutch plate. I had a '71 and an '82 Saab. The vehicles
were clearly designed not only be maintained, but maintained in a
climate where you didn't want to be getting under the car.

The problem was, as much as I liked the cars, they were definitely
high-maintenance vehicles.

I guess low-maintenance with an poorly located oil filter isn't a bad
trade off, but why-oh-why did Honda put the 1st generation oil filter
just above the catalytic converter (and the dipstick under the
manifold's heat shield)? One of the Honda mechanics even commented
"If you happen to touch the cat while doing an oil change, plan on
losing some skin."

Is the filter in the 2nd generation CR-V also near the cat? Did Honda
at least improve the dip stick design so you don't need a flashlight
to find where it goes back in?

The dipstick w/BRIGHT ORANGE cap runs right through the valve cover. It is
in a PERFECT position.

The filter is far enough away from the CAT that it shouldn't be a problem.

I noticed something that is a very minor detail but it shows how much HONDA
sweats these things:
* When you remove the oil filter (Horizontally placed) invariably some oil
runs out onto part of the engine cradle. Honda put a little "crease" on the
edge so that the oil drains off this support member and into your drain pan
if it happens to be there!

I dont think I have ever had a dipstick as easy as the 2002 CRV.
Someday I may change my own oil in it, but right now I am happy not
to after 35 years and 20 some cars of doing it myself.
The dealer charges $25 and washes the car also. Even at the severe
interval of 5,000 miles, it is only 3 times a year. I spend more
than $75 a year on stupid stuff.

I don't advise changing the filter location. If you notice I don't make
major mods that affect the engine or drive components. I have had bad
experiences when changing the excellent Honda engineering. You may have
excellent and usable results by changing the filter location but I don't
support it.
As BAD as it may seem, Honda had a VERY good reason for its placement.

Actually, that's me that has the AmsOi dual filter. It has been excellent
