Hi,

I have 2002 Accord V6 Automatic with approximately 40,000 miles. I keep hearing a whirling sound from the back of the car when the engine is off. The sound is only noticeable when the car in the garage and you are outside of the vehicle. This happens every 15 minutes or so, and last approximately 10 seconds. I have taken the car to Honda and their service tech didn’t find anything. Any ideas and is this normal?

Thanks,
Woody

Maybe you just need to adjust your cooling fan to minimize the whirling sound and in that you would also know if it was really the fan... Goodluck!

I don't think it's the cooling fan at all - that would be noticeable inside the vehicle, and wouldn't happen on and off with the engine off. What I think it is the the evaporative emission system leak detection pump. It's quiet, it is towards the back of the engine bay (the cooling fan is at the front), and it would only come on for a few seconds at a time. The pump is supposed to operate every so often while the car is off to check for leaks. If there is any problem detected you will be informed with a check engine light.

I sure am learning a lot about sounds and where they are coming from. For that to be running and checking for leaks when the car is off. Then if you do have a leak the "Check Engine" light would come on. Hopefully that light won't come on. Have you ever had a car when that is the only light you ever see?
